Is The Call Of Duty Hype Train Running On Fumes?

We’ve seen a number of leaks regarding the latest addition to the Call of Duty franchise over the last week weeks, but has the official reveal of Call of Duty: Ghosts proven the franchise is on its last legs? The official reveal trailer was released yesterday but it didn’t really have that epic feel that came with its predecessors. I usually have literally hundreds of emails from friends and fellow journalists discussing the latest installment but when I spoke to people, most of the fans weren’t even bothered about watching the new trailer.

The official reveal has provided us with a bit more information than the previous Tesco leaks. The single-player campaign will apparently take place in the future but will make use of modern day technology due to an undisclosed major plot event. It’s probably safe to assume this is some kind of large-scale nuclear attack or something else that prohibits the advancement of science and technology. Destructible environments will also make an appearance in Call of Duty: Ghosts but we weren’t given any information regarding the scale.

Activison have boasted that Call of Duty: Ghosts will be available on a next-generation Call of Duty engine. It was also confirmed that the game will release on the PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and next-generation consoles.

“Everyone was expecting us to make Modern Warfare 4, which would have been the safe thing to do. But we’re not resting on our laurels,” said Mark Rubin, executive producer of developer Infinity Ward.

“We saw the console transition as the perfect opportunity to start a new chapter for Call of Duty. So we’re building a new sub-brand, a new engine, and a lot of new ideas and experiences for our players. We can’t wait to share them with our community.

“Infinity Ward is going all-in to create the next generation of Call of Duty worthy of the world’s greatest fans.”

Whether the game delivers is yet to be seen and even with the lesser hype than previous years, I don’t think anyone is really doubting how successful it will be. What are your thoughts? Do you think the COD reign is coming to an end?
