We’ve had a pretty exciting week in the gaming industry with big announcements from Capcom, Bethesda and Team17. This weekly burst will give you a quick run-down of all the exciting happenings in the world of gaming for this week.
Crytek have confirmed rumors of a Monster Hunter MMO game in recent press release. In the email they confirmed that Capcom and Tencent games are currently developing the second MMO addition to the popular Japanese franchise and they also confirmed that the game will be a PC-exclusive releasing on an International scale.
Team17 have announced a free-to-play weekend for their hit Steam game Worms Revolution. Beginning tonight all Steam users will be able to sample the hilarious game-play in the latest Worms title, without paying a penny thanks to Valve’s digital distribution service. The weekend also marks the beginning of a Worms Revolution sale on the Playstation Network.
Bethesda have been teasing fans with their latest marketing stunt; Project Zwei. Now confirmed as a new survival horror franchise from Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, The Evil Within is all set to reinvent the once fan favorite survival horror franchise after lackluster AAA releases in recent years.
A recent image that surfaced from the upcoming The Last of Us, has excited critics and fans alike. In the image it showed an upcoming date, 10/17/2013, as a possible release for the Playstation 4. Adding credence to this rumor is a similar hint from Naughty Dog in Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception where a newspaper hinted at a new franchise based around a post-apocalyptic background, the setting for The Last of Us.
The hacking group LulzSec recently took a hit to their ranks as suspected Playstation Network hacker, Cody Kretsinger, has been jailed for a year. The individual confirmed to be behind a Sony Pictures hack in 2011 was also suspected in a hacking of the Playstation Network but the latter could not be proven. He now faces up to one year in prison and probably won’t be “lulling” during much of his time there.
North America will be treated to the Director’s Cut of Deadly Premonition on April 30, 2013. Currently in the Guinness Book of World Records for receiving the most polarized review scores in history, the original title split the gaming industry in half. Some considered it to be utter brilliance while others thought it was a total waste of time. It’s going to be interesting to see how current journalists perceive the next title.
Guillaume de Fondaumiere of Quantic Dreams recently came out to discuss the success of the unique PS3 title, Heavy Rain. Costing €16.7 million to make and almost €30 million in marketing and advertising, the innovative game has proven the typical gaming stereotype to be wrong. Innovation and risk taking does pay off as Sony have reported profits of over €100 million with the sales of Heavy Rain. Great news for Quantic Dreams upcoming title, Beyond Two souls.
The Xbox 360 Entertainment Awards have now finished, with a few surprising winners. Call of Duty: Black Ops II managed to beat Halo 4 to the finishing pole and picked up not only Best Game, but also Best Add-On. The hugely popular Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition picked up the Best XBLA title while there was still no sign of the flagship exclusive Halo. Maybe next year?
